Keeping Your Projector in Top Shape

Home theater projectors require periodic maintenance to deliver the best picture quality. The two most important maintenance tasks are lamp replacement and filter cleaning.

Signs Your Projector Lamp Needs Replacement

  • The image is noticeably dimmer than when it was new
  • Colors appear washed out or yellowish
  • The projector displays a lamp warning indicator
  • The projector shuts off unexpectedly (thermal protection due to an aging lamp)

Lamp Life Expectations

Most Sony projectors installed by Smart Systems have lamp lives of 2,000 to 5,000 hours depending on the model and usage mode. If you watch 3-4 hours per day, expect to replace the lamp every 2-3 years.

Filter Cleaning

Dust buildup on the air filter reduces cooling efficiency and can shorten lamp life:
  1. Check your projector's filter every 6 months
  2. If visibly dusty, remove the filter and gently vacuum or blow it clean with compressed air
  3. Replace the filter if it is damaged or cannot be cleaned

What to Avoid

  • Never touch the projector lamp with bare hands — oils from your skin can cause hot spots and premature failure
  • Do not block ventilation — ensure adequate airflow around the projector
  • Do not ignore warning lights — continuing to use a failing lamp can damage the projector
