Optimizing Your Home Theater Audio

A properly configured surround sound system creates an immersive viewing experience. Here are tips to get the most from your setup.

Speaker Levels and Balance

If dialogue is hard to hear or effects are too loud:
  1. Increase the center channel volume — This is where most dialogue comes from. On your Sony receiver, go to Settings > Speaker Setup > Level and raise the center channel by 2-3 dB
  2. Check the surround mode — Make sure your receiver is set to the correct mode for your content (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, or standard 5.1/7.1)
  3. Adjust the subwoofer level — If bass is overwhelming, reduce the subwoofer volume on the receiver or on the subwoofer itself

Room Considerations

  • Hard surfaces (tile, glass, wood) reflect sound and can cause echo — area rugs and curtains help
  • Furniture placement matters — avoid placing large objects between speakers and the listening position
  • Subwoofer placement — corner placement increases bass output, but can make it boomy. Moving it slightly away from walls can improve accuracy

Common Issues

Surround speakers seem quiet:
  • Check that the receiver has correctly identified all connected speakers in its setup menu
  • Run the automatic room calibration if your receiver supports it
Audio sounds flat or non-immersive:
  • Verify you are playing surround content (not stereo)
  • Check that the correct audio output is selected on your streaming device (Dolby Digital or higher)
