No Sound from Your Speakers: Quick Troubleshooting

Step-by-step guide to diagnosing why your speakers have stopped producing sound.

Why You Might Have No Sound

There are several common reasons audio stops working. Most can be resolved without a service call.

Check These First

  1. Is the correct input selected? — If using a receiver (Sony, etc.), make sure it is set to the right input (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.)
  2. Is the volume up and unmuted? — Check both the TV volume and the receiver/amplifier volume
  3. Is the amplifier powered on? — Check your equipment rack — the amplifier should have a power light on
  4. Are all cables connected? — HDMI cables can work loose over time, especially behind wall-mounted TVs

Specific Scenarios

No sound from in-ceiling/in-wall speakers:
  • Check that the zone amplifier is powered on in your equipment rack
  • If you have in-wall volume knobs, make sure they are turned up
  • Restart the amplifier by unplugging it for 30 seconds
No sound from a soundbar (Sonos Playbar/Episode):
  • Check the optical or HDMI cable connection between your TV and soundbar
  • On your TV, go to Settings > Audio Output and verify it is set to the external speaker
  • Power cycle the soundbar
No sound in one room but other rooms work:
  • The issue is likely zone-specific — check the amplifier channel for that zone
  • If using Control4, check the app to see if that room's audio is muted or volume is at zero

When to Contact Smart Systems

If none of the above resolves the issue, the problem may be with wiring, a failed amplifier channel, or a programming change needed in Control4.
