How Smart Systems Handles Software and Firmware Updates

How software and firmware updates are handled for your Control4, Sonos, UniFi, and other smart home devices.

General Inquiry

Keeping Your System Current

The products in your home run on software and firmware that manufacturers periodically update for performance, bugs, and new features.

What Gets Updated

  • Control4 / Crestron controllers — Operating system and programming updates
  • Ubiquiti / UniFi networking — Firmware for access points, switches, and gateways
  • Sonos speakers — Firmware updated automatically via the Sonos app
  • Security cameras and recorders — Firmware for stability and features
  • Smart locks and sensors — ZigBee firmware (less frequent)

How Updates Are Handled

Manufacturer-managed: Sonos updates automatically. UniFi devices can be updated through the controller interface.
Smart Systems-managed: Control4 and Crestron updates are applied by us during service visits or remotely. We test updates before applying them to ensure compatibility.

Why We Don't Auto-Update Everything

Some updates can change behavior or cause temporary incompatibilities. We prefer to:
  1. Test updates in our environment first
  2. Schedule updates during convenient times
  3. Be available to troubleshoot if needed

Requesting an Update

If a product prompts for an update (e.g., Sonos app), it is generally safe to proceed. For Control4 or Crestron, contact us first to ensure compatibility with your programming.

Maintenance Plans

Our maintenance plans include periodic check-ups where we review and apply appropriate firmware updates.
