Buffering When Streaming Video

Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, or other streaming services keep buffering, pausing, or dropping quality.

Network & Wi-Fi

Symptoms

  • Video pauses to buffer frequently
  • Quality drops from HD/4K to blurry SD
  • Audio and video get out of sync

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check your internet speed — 4K streaming needs 25+ Mbps. Run a speed test at fast.com from the device having issues.
  2. Use Ethernet if possible — For primary streaming devices (Apple TV, Shield, smart TV), a wired connection eliminates Wi-Fi variability entirely.
  3. Check for network congestion — If someone is downloading a large file or a game update, it can consume all available bandwidth.
  4. Restart the streaming device — A simple reboot clears the cache and resets the network connection.
  5. Check Wi-Fi signal strength — If the TV is far from the nearest access point, the connection may not be stable enough for 4K.

Smart Systems Solution

We configure QoS (Quality of Service) rules that prioritize streaming and AV traffic over background downloads. For distributed video systems, we always recommend wired connections to the source devices.
