Why IoT Devices Are Different

Most smart home devices use the 2.4 GHz band only, have small antennas, and limited processing power. They're more sensitive to network changes than phones or laptops.

Common Causes

  1. Too many devices on one AP — If 30+ IoT devices are on a single access point, it can get overwhelmed.
  2. Channel congestion — The 2.4 GHz band only has 3 non-overlapping channels (1, 6, 11). In dense neighborhoods, interference is common.
  3. DHCP exhaustion — If your DHCP pool is too small, devices can't get an IP address.
  4. Wi-Fi password was changed — IoT devices don't prompt you to re-enter a password. They just silently fail to connect.
  5. Router firmware update — Some updates change settings or restart the network, and IoT devices can struggle to reconnect.

What to Do

  1. Check your router's connected device list — is the device showing up?
  2. Power cycle the affected device (unplug for 30 seconds).
  3. If the device has been offline for a while, you may need to re-run its setup process through the manufacturer's app.
  4. Ensure your DHCP pool has enough addresses (we recommend at least 200 for smart homes).
