Symptoms
- Web pages take a long time to load
- Speed test results are significantly below your ISP plan speed
- Video calls are choppy or pixelated
Troubleshooting Steps
- Run a speed test — Visit fast.com or speedtest.net from a device connected via Ethernet (wired) to get a baseline. Then test on Wi-Fi for comparison.
- Check how many devices are active — Smart homes can have 50–100+ devices. If many are actively streaming, downloading, or updating, bandwidth gets shared.
- Restart your router and modem — Unplug both, wait 30 seconds, plug in the modem first, wait 2 minutes, then plug in the router.
- Check for firmware updates — Outdated router firmware can cause performance issues. Check your router admin panel or app.
- Test from different locations — If speeds are slow only in certain rooms, you may have a coverage gap (see: "Wi-Fi Dead Zones").
- Contact your ISP — If wired speeds are also slow, the issue may be with your internet provider, not your home network.
Smart Systems Tip
We design networks with dedicated bandwidth allocation for critical systems (AV streaming, security cameras) so they don't compete with everyday browsing. If your network wasn't set up with QoS (Quality of Service), we can configure it.
