Battery-Powered Smart Devices

Several devices in your smart home run on batteries and will need periodic replacement. Here is what you need to know.

Yale Smart Locks

Battery type: 4x AA alkaline batteries (do not use rechargeable batteries)
How to tell batteries are low:
  • The Control4 app or touchscreen will display a low battery warning
  • The lock keypad may beep or flash red when you lock/unlock
  • The lock may respond slowly
How to replace:
  1. Remove the interior cover of the lock (slide up or unscrew depending on model)
  2. Remove the old batteries and insert 4 new AA batteries
  3. Replace the cover
  4. Test the lock from both the keypad and the Control4 app
Expected battery life: 12-18 months with normal use

Hunter Douglas Motorized Shades

Battery type: Varies by model — most use a rechargeable battery pack (Hunter Douglas PowerView battery wand) or a plug-in power adapter
How to tell batteries are low:
  • Shades move slowly or stop partway
  • Shades do not respond to commands
For rechargeable battery wands:
  1. Remove the battery wand from the shade headrail
  2. Charge it using the included USB charger (4-6 hours for full charge)
  3. Reinsert the wand
For non-rechargeable models: Contact Smart Systems for the correct battery type and replacement procedure.

After Replacing Batteries

Most devices will reconnect automatically. If a device does not respond after battery replacement, try restarting the Control4 controller to re-establish the connection.
