Common Causes of False Alarms

False alarms are inconvenient and, in some areas, can result in fines from local authorities. Here are the most common causes and how to address them.

Top Causes

  1. Pets triggering motion sensors — Sensors may need to be adjusted for pet immunity (up to 40-80 lbs depending on the sensor)
  2. Doors or windows not fully closed — A door contact sensor will trigger if the door is slightly ajar
  3. Low battery on a sensor — Wireless sensors with low batteries can send erratic signals
  4. HVAC drafts — Air vents blowing curtains or lightweight objects near motion sensors
  5. Incorrect arming — Arming in "Away" mode when someone is still home will trigger motion sensors

How to Reduce False Alarms

  • Check all doors and windows before arming in "Away" mode
  • Use "Stay" mode when you are home — this arms door/window sensors but disables interior motion sensors
  • Replace sensor batteries when you receive a low battery warning on your keypad or in the Control4 app
  • Keep the area around motion sensors clear of moving objects (hanging plants, balloons, pets)

What to Do When a False Alarm Occurs

  1. Enter your disarm code on the keypad immediately
  2. If your system is monitored, call your monitoring company right away to cancel the dispatch
  3. Identify which sensor triggered the alarm — this information is shown on the keypad or in the Control4 app
