Improving Camera Image Quality

If a camera that previously worked well is now showing blurry or dark images, the issue is usually environmental or a simple setting change.

Blurry Image

Dirty lens:
  • This is the most common cause, especially for outdoor cameras
  • Gently clean the lens dome or cover with a soft, lint-free cloth
  • Do not use harsh chemicals — use water or a lens cleaning solution
Incorrect focus:
  • If the camera was bumped or moved, the focus may need adjustment
  • Some cameras have a manual focus ring around the lens
  • Contact Smart Systems if the camera needs professional refocusing
Condensation:
  • Moisture inside the dome can cause blurriness, especially with temperature changes
  • Outdoor cameras with broken seals may experience this — contact us for replacement

Dark Image

Infrared (IR) night vision issues:
  • Most cameras switch to IR (black and white) mode in low light
  • If the IR LEDs are not activating, restart the camera by unplugging for 30 seconds
  • Check that IR mode is set to Auto in camera settings, not disabled
Camera facing a bright light:
  • A camera pointed at a window, lamp, or the sun can cause the rest of the image to appear dark
  • This is the camera's auto-exposure compensating for the bright area
  • Adjusting the viewing angle slightly or enabling WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) can help
Insufficient lighting at night:
  • IR illumination has a limited range (typically 30-100 feet depending on the camera)
  • Adding exterior lighting can dramatically improve nighttime image quality

When to Contact Smart Systems
