Improving Camera Image Quality
If a camera that previously worked well is now showing blurry or dark images, the issue is usually environmental or a simple setting change.
Blurry Image
Dirty lens: - This is the most common cause, especially for outdoor cameras
- Gently clean the lens dome or cover with a soft, lint-free cloth
- Do not use harsh chemicals — use water or a lens cleaning solution
Incorrect focus: - If the camera was bumped or moved, the focus may need adjustment
- Some cameras have a manual focus ring around the lens
- Contact Smart Systems if the camera needs professional refocusing
Condensation: - Moisture inside the dome can cause blurriness, especially with temperature changes
- Outdoor cameras with broken seals may experience this — contact us for replacement
Dark Image
Infrared (IR) night vision issues: - Most cameras switch to IR (black and white) mode in low light
- If the IR LEDs are not activating, restart the camera by unplugging for 30 seconds
- Check that IR mode is set to Auto in camera settings, not disabled
Camera facing a bright light: - A camera pointed at a window, lamp, or the sun can cause the rest of the image to appear dark
- This is the camera's auto-exposure compensating for the bright area
- Adjusting the viewing angle slightly or enabling WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) can help
Insufficient lighting at night: - IR illumination has a limited range (typically 30-100 feet depending on the camera)
- Adding exterior lighting can dramatically improve nighttime image quality
When to Contact Smart Systems
If cleaning and restarting don't resolve the issue, the camera may have a hardware problem or need repositioning. Contact us for a diagnostic.
