Wi-Fi Interference From Other Devices

Other electronic devices in your home or office are interfering with your Wi-Fi signal, causing slowdowns or disconnections.

Network & Wi-Fi

Common Interference Sources

  • Microwave ovens — Operate on the 2.4 GHz band and can disrupt Wi-Fi while in use.
  • Baby monitors — Many use 2.4 GHz frequencies.
  • Cordless phones (older DECT models)
  • Bluetooth devices — Also operate on 2.4 GHz.
  • Neighboring Wi-Fi networks — Especially in apartments, condos, or dense office buildings.
  • USB 3.0 devices — Can generate interference that affects 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

What to Do

  1. Switch to 5 GHz — The 5 GHz band is much less crowded and isn't affected by microwaves or baby monitors.
  2. Change your Wi-Fi channel — Use a Wi-Fi analyzer to find the least congested channel.
  3. Move APs away from interference sources — Don't mount access points next to microwaves, electrical panels, or elevator shafts.
  4. Use DFS channels — If your equipment supports it, DFS channels on 5 GHz offer additional spectrum with less competition.

Smart Systems Approach

During installation, we perform a site survey that includes interference analysis. We select optimal channels and power levels to minimize interference from day one.
