Common Interference Sources
- Microwave ovens — Operate on the 2.4 GHz band and can disrupt Wi-Fi while in use.
- Baby monitors — Many use 2.4 GHz frequencies.
- Cordless phones (older DECT models)
- Bluetooth devices — Also operate on 2.4 GHz.
- Neighboring Wi-Fi networks — Especially in apartments, condos, or dense office buildings.
- USB 3.0 devices — Can generate interference that affects 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
What to Do
- Switch to 5 GHz — The 5 GHz band is much less crowded and isn't affected by microwaves or baby monitors.
- Change your Wi-Fi channel — Use a Wi-Fi analyzer to find the least congested channel.
- Move APs away from interference sources — Don't mount access points next to microwaves, electrical panels, or elevator shafts.
- Use DFS channels — If your equipment supports it, DFS channels on 5 GHz offer additional spectrum with less competition.
Smart Systems Approach
During installation, we perform a site survey that includes interference analysis. We select optimal channels and power levels to minimize interference from day one.
