Symptoms
- No signal or very weak signal in specific rooms
- Devices in certain areas can't connect or have extremely slow speeds
- Coverage drops past a certain floor or wing of the building
Common Causes
- Building materials — Concrete walls, brick, metal studs, and foil-backed insulation block Wi-Fi signals significantly.
- Distance — Standard routers have limited range, especially on the 5 GHz band.
- Floor-to-floor coverage — Signals weaken considerably between floors.
- Appliance interference — Large appliances, HVAC systems, and electrical panels can block signals.
What You Can Do
- Test signal strength — Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app (e.g., WiFiman by Ubiquiti) to map signal levels throughout your space.
- Reposition your router — If it's in a corner or closet, moving it to a more central location can help.
- Check for obstructions — Make sure nothing is physically blocking or sitting on top of your access points.
