Router or Access Point Keeps Rebooting

Your router or wireless access point restarts on its own repeatedly, causing network outages.

Network & Wi-Fi

Symptoms

  • Network goes down for 2–5 minutes and comes back
  • Access point LED indicators cycle through startup sequence
  • You can hear the router click or see it physically restart

Common Causes

  1. Overheating — Routers in enclosed cabinets, AV racks without ventilation, or hot attics can overheat and auto-restart.
  2. Power issues — Unstable power, loose power cables, or a failing power supply can cause reboots.
  3. Firmware bugs — A buggy firmware update can cause boot loops.
  4. Hardware failure — If the device is 5+ years old, internal components may be failing.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check ventilation — Make sure the device has airflow. Remove anything stacked on top of it.
  2. Try a different power outlet — Rule out electrical issues.
  3. Check for firmware updates — Or roll back to a previous stable version.
  4. Factory reset — As a last resort, reset the device and reconfigure. (Contact us before doing this on a managed network.)

When to Contact Us

Repeated rebooting usually indicates a hardware issue that needs replacement. We carry spare equipment and can typically swap a failing unit same-day.
